Heirlooms of Healing: Crafting Ancestral Connections Through Art and Spirituality

When I began my spiritual journey, it often felt isolating and overwhelming. I did not grow up in the spiritual practices I was being called to learn; I did not have people around me to offer guidance or direction. I was overwhelmed with the information online, desiring to find a teacher, mentors, and community to grow with on this path. With years of practice, joining communities, being mentored, studying, and developing my intuition and spiritual gifts, I have clarity on my own path, and I am eager to guide others to discover their own.

I realized I am my greatest resource, and you are yours.

Following Intuition

I opened myself up one day to deeply explore all I have created. I am an artist, performer, and director with visions, ideas, students, co-creators, and experiences that have made my spirit feel liberated. I looked at old journals often and viewed old paintings and works of art, and it was a message to myself of my value in recording my life. As I dived deep into all that I had captured, I realized that the calling of recording, archiving, researching, teaching, and inspiring is my path in life. I have spent 16 years teaching theatre education, which primarily involved showing students their unique gifts and talents beyond theatre. I always focused on the heart and soul of each person I worked with, and through narrative, we found their strengths.

Looking back at what I have learned, where I learned it, and how it blossomed within me is a healing balm. I spent a few years writing so my children will have pieces of me beyond social media posts and pictures. My children will have my gifts, my story, and my art. I began to focus on creating what I wished I had from my ancestors when I began going deeper spiritually. I am capturing that I am a spirit experiencing being human. I began to create a series of art, poems, and reflections that share my interpretation of the stars, the Bible, God, decks of cards, and more. Creating our family story from oral history, documentation, and shamanic travels. I am leaving what I wish I could have found from my family when I began to seek more spiritual knowledge.

Understanding the Past to Move Forward

Systematic forces have strived to dismantle and erase indigenous practices that once were the foundation of our ancestor's spirits. By creating a Healing Heirloom, you are creating a unique art journal that serves as a bridge between past and present.

Within a healing heirloom, it is essential to use your handwriting and creativity to convey your practices and feelings attached to them. This work demonstrates how you used your spiritual practices to overcome aspects of our human experience. The book holds more than your journal writing; it holds sigils, symbols, phrases, mantras, and imagery that are blended together to create layers of communication.

This heirloom will serve as an anchor of remembrance in your bloodline of the practices and the journey that brought you to the moment of spiritual clarity. The creative spirit will lead the creation, inviting the creator to go beyond words to embrace symbols as messengers. This endeavor is not just about art; it's a journey of spiritual reconnection, self-discovery, and the preservation of healing practices for future generations.
