In the journey of a lifetime, we gather memories, learn valuable lessons, and create lasting connections. There is power and inspiration in these experiences and reflections. You can embrace that power by capturing and preserving the treasure of life experiences within your family's story. Creating family heirlooms is a beautiful way to shape the values and identity of generations to come and offers a path of healing and understanding.

Photographs & Scrapbooks: Collect photographs from the past and present. Our modern world allows us to hold many images in virtual spaces. It is good to store them in curated folders but they should not only exist digitally. Printing photos from your phones and devices and making copies of older photos gives you the opportunity to create scrapbooks. Seeing similar features, gestures, and interests revealed through scrapbooking is rewarding.
Family Recipe Book: A collection of cherished family recipes. Knowing staple items on the family menu and creating a cookbook or framing a single recipe that has deep meaning reveals traditions. Add to the recipes short stories that the generations to come will enjoy. The anecdotal stories will add to the understanding of how each recipe manifested in the family's world.
Jewelry: Family jewelry, amulets, or timepieces with sentimental value. These pieces of adornment shared a story of what was valued by the wearer. Jewelry heirlooms are not only about the price tag to afford it, it is about who wore it often and why. If it has meaning and demonstrates a family value or identity then it is a valuable piece.
Diaries and Journals: Personal diaries or journals that reveal the heart and experiences of family members. Seeing the handwriting of loved ones captures their essence in a way we lose from generation to generation. Things written are often things that are vulnerable and in that vulnerability, there is a chance to discover family patterns, hopes, and needs.
Family Bible: A family Bible with records of births, marriages, and deaths. This is an old-school way of maintaining family records that you can resurrect if there is no current family bible. Use familysearch.org or ancestry.com to help fill in areas you are unsure of.
Recording: Videos and audio recordings capture the nature of the person in the moment. Old home movies on VHS tapes or DVDs or more modern recordings and even social media posts can be stored virtually on memory cards or in the cloud for preservation. These files can be used to form slideshows or short films revealing family history and traditions.
Artwork: Paintings or drawings created by family members. If you are an artist or there is one in the family preserve your artwork. Additionally, an original piece made specifically to reflect the family can be tasked. Handcrafted family trees are another way to allow the artists of the present to interact with the artists in future generations to build upon.
Clothing and Quilts: Special clothing items from the past. How lovely to be able to wrap yourself up in the clothing or quilt of a loved one. Quilts can be made with clothing and telling stories through the quilt blocks. This is also an inspiration for future generations to share stories through quilting as well.
Family Traditions: Documentation of family customs and traditions. Family traditions can be grand and small and quite often the small ones are most impactful. There are heirloom workbooks that can be filled out by various family members to capture the traditions of the family and each unique member takes on those traditions.
Family Heirloom Box: A box filled with various heirlooms and keepsakes. Curate a box or trunk with a mixture of the above items storing it safely for years to come. This can be a place to revisit with your family on special occasions or reunions opening a time for other members of the family to be inspired and to share heirlooms they may have.
At the age of 19, all my grandparents were deceased and a lot of knowledge was lost. Much of our family history was a mystery and I decided to find out as much as possible about my family's past through research, interviews, and divination. The information uncovered helped my healing journey and strengthened our family bond. Ancestral veneration at my ancestor's altar assisted that work greatly.
A collection of family stories in various forms can serve individuals in the family for generations to come.
Hold on to the legacy you are creating through family heirlooms. Take hold of all that matters most and gift it to the ones who will one day know you as an ancestor.
