Stories liberate the soul.

A life lived is a story to be told. When we learn and understand the journey of someone's life, we can understand why they react to certain situations in a particular way, how much weight they carry within, or how much power they have gained in life, and we learn lessons we can apply to our own lives. Stories hold treasures of wisdom, compassion, and opportunity for growth. Utilizing soulful narratives to understand our ancestors and their connection with our spiritual gifts and potential obstacles can be stepping stones for your lineage's return to wellness.

In my spiritual journey, I have found great comfort in the understanding that I chose to be here, in this specific life, as a black woman, a mother, the daughter of Latonia and Roger, the wife of Jonathan and the mother of my 3 children. The hardships I faced led me back to remembering the growth my soul desired to achieve in this life. My life story is a story of remembering my sensitivity as a power, remembering to utilize my voice, and remembering that we all are connected. The harm done to anyone is harm done to self; love expressed to anyone is love expressed to self. This belief is within the system of Ifa, a traditional African religion. It is not the only culture that believes in soul contracts.

Souls that cause harm in life can leave a residue of that harm for generations. Souls that cause love and healing in their lifetime do the same for future generations. I believe we all made contracts to enter this life to develop our souls and the souls of those around us. In understanding the stories of our family history, we can learn to identify areas that need attention for healing and growth and areas that can unlock gifts.

What are Soulful Stories?

  • Soulful Stories are intuitive narratives created to understand better the soul's impact on a bloodline during an ancestor's lifetime.

  • Identifying patterns in the age of birthing children, the age of marriages and/or divorces, and stories of living ancestor's treatment in childhood can provide clues to the soulful story of an ancestor.

  • Soulful stories are created to release baggage or connections with unhealed energy and trauma.

  • Soulful Stories can be narrated as stories of power for ancient ancestors. Trauma and pain are not the only inheritance we have. Before the trauma, we had elevated ancestors, and if you want to create soulful stories, you are an elevated healing ancestor in your bloodline.

  • Soulful stories can create affirmations to use during prayers and rituals.

We are not on healing journeys; we are on journeys of remembering.

Our spiritual growth involves delving into the roots of our existence and remembering what is in our soul's memory so that we hold on to our power and gifts and release the burdens of suffering.

Step 1: It all starts with you!

Regardless of how close you are to your family, regardless of known biology and ancestors, your family tree starts with you. Begin by writing your experiences in childhood, the thoughts and ideas that flood your brain the most, and the gifts and talents you have. Write freely and honestly. Take note of word choices and keep this writing beside you as you explore genealogical records. Embrace your thoughts and reflections with an open heart and mind, ready to encounter the joys and challenges that may arise. Please recognize that the journey is as significant as the destination, and the lessons learned along the way contribute to your spiritual growth.

Step 2: Research with Reverence

Based on your reflections, compose a single question or objective to begin a focused genealogy search. Think outside of the box, search directories for skills and trades, and use census addresses to see the accessibility to bodies of water or forests. Take an intentional dive into historical records, family archives, and oral histories with an appreciation for the stories waiting to be discovered.

Without a clear focus, it can become overwhelming. After all, genealogy is a lifetime exploration. As you uncover the names and dates, remember that each piece of information represents a thread in the tapestry of your family's narrative. Approach genealogical research with reverence for the lives that came before you and a gateway to practice empathy.

Step 3: Connect with Living Ancestors

While exploring the past is crucial, don't forget the living links to your ancestry. Engage in heartfelt conversations with older family members, capturing their memories, wisdom, and unique perspectives. These living connections serve as bridges between generations, offering valuable insights beyond the pages of historical records. If living relatives are unwilling or unavailable, meditate on the little information you have, journal what information you know, and journal the feelings you have towards them.

Step 4: Document Your Discoveries

As you gather information, document your discoveries meticulously. Create a family tree, compile photographs, and organize relevant documents. This act of documentation not only preserves your findings for future generations but also provides a tangible representation of your family's legacy. Through this process, you become the storyteller, weaving together the threads of your ancestral tapestry.

Step 5: Reflect and Learn

Genealogy isn't merely about names and dates; it's a profound exploration of identity and interconnectedness. Reflect on the stories you've unearthed and the experiences that shaped your ancestors. What experiences, thoughts, and feelings echo in your family's stories? Consider how their resilience, triumphs, and challenges have influenced your journey. Use these reflections as opportunities for personal growth and understanding.

Step 6: Put Findings in Action

The final step in this spiritual growth blueprint is to give actionable reverence to your discoveries. Create an affirmation specific to areas of healing. For example, was there a pattern of abandonment? You may write, "I am worthy of love and connection." Or you may do breath work where, on the exhale, you say, "I release the fear of abandonment," and on the inhale, "I embrace self-love." Repeat these affirmations regularly, especially during moments of heightened anxiety or fear, to reinforce positive beliefs and gradually counter the fear of abandonment. If there are gifts or talents discovered, create with them and affirm your family's talents. These practices will dismantle generational harm and build generational wellness.

You don't have to do this alone.

We all will one day become ancestors, and our descendants will value the work we leave behind.

These steps will lead to a family narrative you can choose to share. Whether through written narratives, family gatherings, or digital platforms, tell the stories that have emerged from your research. In doing so, you contribute to the collective tapestry of human history and pass down the wisdom of your ancestors to future generations.

Genealogical research is more than a quest for information; it's a transformative experience that can fuel spiritual growth. By embracing the journey, researching with reverence, connecting with living ancestors, documenting your discoveries, reflecting on the lessons learned, and putting your findings into action, you not only honor your roots but also contribute to the ever-evolving narrative of the human experience. In the intricate threads of your family's history, you may discover not only where you come from but also the profound lessons that guide you on your spiritual path.
